Suffering from Seasonal Allergies? Elderberry can help!

Ahh! Spring is in the air.

But so are seasonal allergies. As flowers and trees bloom, many find themselves suffering from seasonal allergies. But we can help!

Did you know Elderberry can be effective at easing allergy symptoms?

It's true! Elderberries have been used for centuries for many different ailments, so it is no surprise that these magical little berries can help with symptoms associated with seasonal allergies.

What are seasonal allergies anyway?

Seasonal allergies, or hay fever, are caused by an immune system response to allergens that are present during certain times of the year, typically in the spring. Common seasonal allergens include pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds.

When a person with seasonal allergies comes into contact with these allergens, their immune system produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) that trigger the release of chemicals like histamine, which causes inflammation in the sinuses and other allergy symptoms. These symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy and watery eyes, and coughing.

Although seasonal allergies are usually not life threatening, they are certainly very irritating and people often find themselves needing relief. There are many OTC and prescription options, but those come with yucky ingredients and side effects.

How does elderberry help?

Elderberry has several properties that may help ease allergies:

  1. Antioxidants: Elderberry is rich in antioxidants, such as anthocyanins. Antioxidants are known to help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Inflammation is a major cause of seasonal allergies, so reducing inflammation naturally can help alleviate those symptoms.

  2. Immune system support: Elderberry contains compounds, such as flavonoids and vitamin C,  that are known to support the immune system. A strong and healthy immune system can help the body better cope and deal with allergens, therefore reducing allergy symptoms.

  3. Anti-inflammatory: Elderberry has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help reduce the severity of allergic reactions associated with pollen. Inflammation is a common symptom of allergies, so reducing inflammation can help alleviate symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

  4. Honey: Lastly, we use LOCAL honey as often as we can in our products. There are theories that using local honey may help desensitize the immune system to the pollen that causes allergy symptoms. The theory is that by introducing small amounts of local honey, a person's immune system may become less reactive to these allergens over time.

Although more research is needed to fully understand the effects of elderberry, honey, and other remedies on allergies, the antioxidant, immune-supportive, and anti-inflammatory properties of elderberries suggest that it may be a helpful natural remedy for easing allergy symptoms.

*We always recommend consulting with your health care provider if you have questions or concerns regarding the use of elderberry.
